15. Mute (20%)

Mute Alexander Skarsgard
Netflix

Duncan Jones' long-gestating passion project Mute landed on Netflix early last year and seemed like it would be a major return to form for the director, coming off the critical failure of Warcraft (28%).

With a smaller budget and scale, Jones was back in a familiar sci-fi wheelhouse, and with a talented cast ready to execute his years-in-the-making vision, Mute appeared destined to be a strong critical hit.

And then it came out, without being pre-screened for critics no less.

Though Mute did receive broad praise for its visual style and performances, the easy consensus was that it was a crushing disappointment, lacking a consistent tone or persuasive directorial vision. Blade Runner this ain't.
