20 Most Surprising Rotten Tomatoes Scores Of 2019
5. The Kitchen (22%)
If The Goldfinch was 2019's big Oscar-baiting failure, The Kitchen wasn't too far behind.
Despite being based on a Vertigo comic, debuting director Andrea Berloff had previously received an Oscar nomination for co-writing Straight Outta Compton, and so with its timely, feminist subject matter and all-star cast, The Kitchen seemed primed for critical, commercial, and perhaps even awards success.
But critics came down on the film like a ton of bricks, ripping The Kitchen apart for its cliched narrative, awful script, lackluster direction, and underwhelming performances.
Even with so much talent in front of and behind the camera, it ultimately felt like a straight-to-video Scorsese knock-off and little else. Hence the brutal 22% approval rating, which is a solid 50-60% lower than most were surely expecting.
