12. The Truth - The Last Duel

Ridley Scott's The Last Duel is a terrific epic historical drama, centered around Marguerite de Carrouges' (Jodie Comer) rape accusation levelled against squire Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver).

Scott ingeniously employs the Rashomon storytelling technique to depict the "truth" from the perspective of not only Marguerite and Jacques but also Marguerite's husband Jean (Matt Damon).

It's often been suggested that the film bombed at the box office because of its sensitive subject matter, and due to its perspective-driven structure, we end up seeing the focal rape not once but twice, from Jacques and Marguerite's perspectives.

This naturally makes for incredibly gruelling viewing, especially in the less-sanitised account provided by Marguerite.

Scott certainly doesn't present the attack in gratuitous or exploitative terms, but it's by its nature extremely difficult to watch, with Driver and Comer committing fully to the horrifying physicality of the scene.
