The Film

Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 video game adaptation didn't go over well with critics, but it performed solidly at the box office and remains one of the better video game movies to date.

A sequel quickly followed, 1997's Anderson-less Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, which tanked with critics and audiences, killing the franchise cold.

Talk of a remake or reboot has been ongoing since 2011, and in 2016 it was confirmed that a new Mortal Kombat film was in the works with James Wan (The Conjuring, Furious 7) producing, while newcomer Simon McQuoid may direct.

Apparently Warner Bros. is hoping to build a tentpole franchise out of Mortal Kombat and intends to attract A-list stars with the new movie.

Is It A Good Idea?

Honestly, yes. It's clearly not going to follow the Anderson movie beat-for-beat, but if enough money is thrown at it, it could be a ton of fun. It remains to be seen whether or not Warner Bros. will grant it the R-rating it deserves, and McQuoid's a gamble for sure, but Wan is a talented guy and generally produces good results.

If they take their time and don't rush it for fast returns, this could really work.
