The Film
Ron Howard's 1984 Oscar-nominated rom-com, starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah as a young man and a mermaid who fall in love, has been ripe for a remake for quite some time.
In 2016, it was confirmed that a remake was indeed in development, albeit with a nifty twist. This time the movie will unfold from the mermaid's perspective, and what's more, the mermaid will in fact be a merman, played by Channing Tatum, while the human love interest will be played by Jillian Bell.
Tatum will help produce the project, to be written by Marja-Lewis Ryan (6 Balloons).
Is It A Good Idea?
It'll struggle to match the original's brilliance or popularity, but it at least deserves credit for serving up a refreshing feminist twist on the original formula, and could be a fun time if it leans into its inherent silliness.
Tatum and Bell are great, so if Ryan takes the right angle this could be a rare remake that goes into business for itself and comes up smelling of roses.
