In a move that just about no one could have seen coming, the big bad of the Super Mario Universe, Bowser (Jack Black), showed quite an unexpected side after finally finding the Superstar. Turns out he was just a lovesick puppy the whole time.

Bowser didn't want the star out of some maniacal bid for power; he wanted it to impress Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy). He was sorely in love with Peach and wanted to marry her despite her very reasonable hatred of him.

Quite similar to how Gaston threatened to have Belle's father imprisoned at the refusal of his proposal, followed by his attack on the Beast, Bowser's plan was to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom if he didn't get his wish. At least there was some sort of adoration from Bowser, but still, he missed the mark by quite a wide margin.

Of course, Peach rejected Bowser, and in his rage at his love not being reciprocated (because why would it have been), he waged war against the Mushroom Kingdom, and in a more personal fight, imprisoned and tried to kill Luigi (Charlie Day) because he saw Mario (Chris Pratt) as a rival in the race for Peach's heart.
