20 Movies Destroyed By Their Plot Holes
16. Wonder Woman 1984 - Steve Trevor's Reappearance
Plot holes and superhero flicks go hand in hand, but this one from Wonder Woman 1984 cut far deeper.
The key conflict in WW84 revolves around the Dream Stone, which grants wishes but does damage to the wisher in the process. Wonder Woman/Diana (Gal Gadot) uses it to wish for her deceased boyfriend Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) to return, and he does, but the stone begins to drain her powers.
The stone was a generally ill-conceived MacGuffin with wildly inconsistent powers and rules, and nowhere was this more troublesome than with Steve. So many things that are wished for appear out of nowhere, but Steve, for some reason, reappears in an unnamed man's body rather than just appearing out of thin air like everything else did.
Alongside the confusing mechanics, this entire storyline is one of the distasteful things in the history of the superhero genre. That poor man had his body hijacked and put in many dangerous situations, while it's implied that Steve and Diana sleep together in one scene, making this icky and problematic in the extreme. It was also so out-of-character for Diana and Steve, two immensely decent people, to never once worry about the man Steve had possessed.
As such, what should've been the heart of the film became disturbing as all hell, and it was perhaps the main thing that made WW84 such a disaster. There was no need for Steve to possess someone like this, so it was frustratingly avoidable, too.
