20 Perfect Scenes In God-Awful Horror Movies

17. Burrowing In The Face - Squirm

Ghost Ship
American International Pictures

Squirm revolves around killer worms... that's pretty much it.

The premise of this 1976 creature feature sounds delightfully campy, but the end-result is more sluggish than nerve-shredding.

The only salvageable part is when the creepy-crawlies burrow into the face of one of the characters, Roger.

Now, an amateur visual effects designer would've stuck some rubber worms onto the actors' face and called it a day.

However, this special effect was overseen by Rick Baker, who's considered one of the best makeup designers in cinematic history. To bring this scene to life, the seven-time Oscar winner and his team used animatronic worms and moved them around a skin-like prosthetic attached to the actor's face. Although the attack is composed of several quick cuts, there are two shots that linger on Baker's work, so you get the sense these carnivorous critters are really digging into Roger's face.

To accentuate the tension further, the shot is accompanied by an ear-splitting screech that gets under your skin, (which seems fitting).

It's a shame Squirm didn't turn out well, but at least we got one creative death sequence out of it.
