20 Perfect Scenes In God-Awful Horror Movies

16. The Cow - Shrooms

Shrooms Cow
Vertigo Films

In this cerebral slasher, three couples are unwinding in the woods, unaware they're being hunted by a psychotic monk. Just to make matters worse, the group are tripping on magic mushrooms, meaning they can't tell what's real and what isn't.

It's a fascinating concept, but Shrooms never comes together, due to the barrage of clichés, bad writing, cheap jump scares, and a predictable ending. The premise should keep the audience guessing, but it quickly becomes confusing to watch, making it difficult to stay engaged. On top of that, it never takes advantage of its surreal premise.

Save for one scene. Under the influence of the hallucinogens, one character called Bluto finds himself having a bizarre conversation with a cow. Tripping out of his mind, Bluto believes the farm animal is speaking to him in a deep, ominous voice. The scene is played with a mix of dark humour and horror, as the talking cow delivers cryptic messages, intensifying Bluto’s paranoia and confusion.

It only lasts a minute but demonstrates Shrooms would've been more interesting if it included bonkers moments like this more often.
