20 Perfect Scenes In God-Awful Horror Movies

14. Eddie Gets An Eyeful - Friday the 13: A New Beginning

Ghost Ship
Paramount Pictures

A New Beginning is arguably the worst Friday the 13th instalment, since Jason Voorhees doesn't appear. Instead, the hockey mask-wearing machete wielding villain is a random guy called Roy Burns. Horror lovers were expecting to see Jason terrorising the locals of Crystal Lake, so A New Beginning felt like flagrant false advertising.

That's why it's ironic this entry has one of the best executions in the franchise. While in the forest, Eddie Kelso is startled when he discovers his girlfriend has been impaled by gardening shears. Before he has a chance to react, Roy comes out of nowhere and attacks Eddie.

Rather than using a conventional weapon like a knife or an axe, Roy's tools of choice are a stick and a ringed belt.  Even though this sounds incredibly rudimentary, how Roy uses these items is genius.

Roy knocks Eddie into a tree before wrapping a leather strap across his face and around the trunk. Placing a branch into the belt's ring, Roy begins twisting it, causing it to tighten. The scene uses gore sparingly since it focuses on Roy's actions, cutting to Eddie for a second here and there to show blood spurting out of his eyes as his skull caves in.

The sequence only lasts 25 seconds, but should be applauded for making a belt and a stick look absolutely stomach-churning.
