20 Recent Horror Movies WAY Better Than Expected
13. Good Boy
When word started doing the rounds that a filmmaker had produced a microbudget horror feature with a dog for a protagonist, there was a sure mix of excitement and disbelief that it could actually work.
A dialogue-sparse canine-centric horror film would be a challenge for a seasoned filmmaker to pull off, let alone a first-time feature director working with a mere $70,000 budget and skeleton crew.
But against enormous odds, Ben Leonberg made it work, delivering an atmospheric and affecting supernatural horror film which doubles as a meditation on mortality and the bond between man and dog.
Dog lead Indy received rave reviews for his performance despite not being a trained canine performer in any way, and seemingly sensing the limitations of his project, Leonberg brought it all home inside of a svelte 71 minutes.
Good Boy certainly has its rough edges, but for what could've so easily been a glorified student film that went viral because of its adorable lead actor, the end result actually looks and feels like a Real Movie.
