10. Killing Off Virginia - Happy Gilmore 2
In total fairness, Happy Gilmore 2 was far from the disaster many were expecting it to be - an "unnecessary" belated comedy sequel perhaps, but it at least delivered some decent laughs and hardly besmirched the legacy of the original.
It did, however, make one majorly unforced error in its very first scene.
In the sequel's opening montage, Happy (Adam Sandler) reveals that his wife Virginia (Julie Bowen) died in a freak golfing accident when Happy accidentally hit her with one of his golf balls during a tournament. Oh, and it happened on Mother's Day to somehow make it even worse.
Considering Virginia was a well-liked character from the first film, it left a sour taste for some fans, many feeling that it was basically a lazy, unimaginative way to unpick Happy's happy ending in the first film.
The marketing certainly made it seem like Julie Bowen had a much larger role, so for her to exit the film in its first three minutes was a big bummer.
