20 Recent Movies That Made ONE Huge Mistake

11. Taking FIVE YEARS To Come Out - The Old Guard 2

It's always important to strike while the iron is hot where sequels are concerned, because if a studio waits too long to release a follow-up to a hit movie, they run the risk of dropping it long after everyone stopped caring.

And that's rather the case with The Old Guard 2 - the sequel to Netflix's 2020 superhero blockbuster starring Charlize Theron.

The original was well-received by critics and also posted strong viewing figures, enough that Netflix officially greenlit The Old Guard 2 by January 2021.

It seemed reasonable to assume that the sequel would be out by around 2023, then, but in reality production took long enough that The Old Guard 2 didn't land until July 2025 - almost five years to the day that the original released.

Now of course, the impact of 2023's Hollywood strike action can't be ignored, but even so, the film wrapped shooting in September 2022, almost three years before it finally came out.

According to Theron herself,  "regime changes" at Netflix caused the film to end up in post-production limbo, and so by the time it finally came out, precious few could even remember what the hell happened in the first film.

The Old Guard 2 was ultimately panned by most critics and the audience score wasn't much kinder, though that didn't stop it debuting at #1 on the streamer's top 10.

Even so, this sequel did the exact opposite of what it should've - it arrived late to the party and failed to cultivate much further interest in the IP.
