20 Recent Movies That Made ONE Huge Mistake
18. Abandoning The Horror Vibes - M3GAN 2.0
Considering that M3GAN was a surprise box office smash, the sequel really just needed to repeat the same formula again - a sassy android gets murderously protective of its human owner with darkly humourous results.
But writer-director Gerard Johnstone evidently didn't want to just do the same movie again, but also probably ventured a little too far out there and in turn lost his core audience.
M3GAN 2.0 boldly ditches most of the horror vibes from the original film, operating instead as a sci-fi action comedy that leans far more into camp.
For many who dug the original's black comedy-horror tone, this sequel went a step too silly and in turn wasn't nearly as appealing.
As a result, M3GAN 2.0 received mixed reviews and flopped at the box office, grossing just $39.1 million compared to the original's epic $181.8 million haul.
When a M3GAN sequel was announced it seemed pretty much inconceivable that it could flop, considering the historic success of horror sequels at the box office.
But by straying so far from what made the original a hit, Johnstone effectively killed what could've been a mammoth ongoing franchise.
