14. Mercy
Few recent genre films have offered up a more timely premise than Mercy, in which a detective (Chris Pratt) is accused of murdering his wife (Annabelle Wallis) and given 90 minutes to prove his innocence to an AI judge (Rebecca Ferguson).
In many respects this feels like a throwback to the high-concept cyber-thrillers of the 1990s, and while AI hasn't yet infested the criminal justice system in a substantial way, Mercy's setup definitely provides some intriguingly dystopian food-for-thought.
Yet execution is everything, and Timur Bekmambetov's is an absolute bust in that regard, hamstrung by the decision to confine Pratt's protagonist to a chair for almost the entire film's runtime while piling on increasingly laughable, convoluted plot twists.
Worst of all, though, despite its apparently AI-critical premise, Mercy ultimately ends up feeling like chintzy pro-AI propaganda - a cynical Hollywood Product intended to further normalise the insidious presence of AI in just about every facet of human existence. Gross.
