20 Terrible 2014 Movies That Should Never Have Happened

18. Sex Tape

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 18% A rude, R-rated comedy starring two likeable actors with subject matter that, in the age of nude celebrity leaks and private security fears, is all too relevant? It sure sounds promising on that basis, but the dispiritingly limp Sex Tape feels more like a 95-minute advert for Apple than an actual movie. For starters, the execution of the "sex tape out in the wild" premise just isn't very convincing, and though being a stickler over technical details in a movie like this is sorta missing the point, there's zero effort here to actually represent technology in the way that society engages with it. It makes no sense. The bulk of the movie consists of numerous "cheeky" and "raunchy" scenarios as Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz try to recover their distributed iPads containing their naughty video, but the end result is surprisingly tame, and aside from some colourful language, barely satisfies the requirements of an R-rated movie. Above all else, this film was a huge missed opportunity. The filmmakers were clearly too busy counting their cheques from Apple to actually come up with a script worth shooting.
