20 TERRIFYING Scenes In TERRIBLE Horror Movies
14. Mass Suicide - The Happening
M. Night Shyamalan has never had a problem devising intriguing setups for his movies, but the follow-through has been frustratingly inconsistent.
Case in point we have The Happening, a thriller centered around an unseen force driving humanity to suicide, and yet as unnerving a premise as that is, it quickly descends into an unintentionally campy farce headlined by the staggeringly miscast Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel.
But that opening scene sure was a banger alright.
It all kicks off in New York City just as the suicidal pandemic begins to take hold - in Central Park a woman calmly stabs herself in the neck with a hairpin, and construction workers then start throwing themselves off the roof of a nearby building.
The shot of the construction workers sailing off the edge of the building to their deaths, followed by the sound of them violently hitting the ground, is genuinely one of the most haunting moments from any Shyamalan film - and suggested a much better movie was on the way.
