20 TERRIFYING Scenes In TERRIBLE Horror Movies
12. Rebecca Drowns - Night Swim
Night Swim is proof perfect of just how difficult it is to adapt even a well-received short film into a more expansive feature.
As fun as the concept of a haunted swimming pool is, writer-director Bryce McGuire - who also helmed the short - ill-advisedly goes the self-serious route here, resulting in a dull, low-energy affair that thoroughly wastes leads Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon.
The opening scene sets an appropriately terrifying vibe, though, given that Night Swim kicks off with a 1992-set prologue where a young girl, Rebecca (Ayazhan Dalabayeva), heads out to her family's pool in the middle of the night to retrieve her brother's toy boat.
However, poor Rebecca ends up getting yanked into the pool by something and, despite her attempts to escape, is drowned.
Killing a kid in your opening scene is one thing, but the fact that this happens all while Rebecca's family and neighbours are sound asleep, in an otherwise unremarkable suburban neighbourhood no less, makes it all the more disturbing.
