10. A Rather Unexpected Turn At The Academy Awards

The various awards that make up the Oscars (and awards bodies in general) have had their fair share of controversy and confusion over the years. From unnecessary categories, baffling wins and misplaced nominees, the most prestigious time of the film year can be an unwieldy beast to predict and control.

Whiplash was not spared this kind of bewildering treatment during the 2015 awards season as it received an Adapted Screenplay nod at that year’s Oscars instead of the expected Original Screenplay nod. Damien Chazelle noted that, although the short film’s existence led to the feature being shot, it was meant to serve as a proof of concept that a feature film could work, meaning that the screenplay was indeed, an original piece of work.

Award misplacement aside, it is without doubt that the flick’s three Oscar wins were anything to be complained about.
