Speaking of daddy penguins, it would appear that the film had a fair bit to do with a spike in the population of monochrome flightless birds in the English countryside. Let me explain.

The production desperately wanted to use real King Penguins for the shoot, but the only tame specimens in captivity were at a bird sanctuary in the Cotswolds. Undeterred, however, Burton had the birds flown over to America in the specially-refrigerated hold of a cargo plane. The luxury didn’t stop there though.

The feathered superstars were given their own refrigerated trailer, their own swimming pool with half a tonne of fresh ice replenished every day, and had a smorgasbord of fresh fish delivered daily directly from the docks. The set was kept suitably chilly for the birds, and they even had their own around-the-clock bodyguard, presumably to scare off Kevin Costner.
