20 Things You Didn't Know About Catwoman

8. The Hedare Sets Were Inspired By Piet Mondrian

Dutch abstract artist, Piet Mondrian is best known for painting city blocks in various conurbations around the world in primary colours of red, blue and yellow.

If you look carefully at the production design in Catwoman, particularly the offices of Hedare Beauty, you can see how Mondrian's work inspired the look of the building.

The main atrium of the skyscraper was represented by Central City, a combined university campus and shopping mall in Surrey, British Columbia, which was adapted to reflect this artistic style.

For a film where the main character is a brilliant, yet neglected artist, the visual references to other artworks can still be appreciated, even if the film is not the best of offerings. Moreover, it should be noted that the real-life cosmetics chain, L'Oréal has actually made use of Mondrian's works in promoting its products.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
