20 Things You Didn't Know About Inception
7. This Was The Last Best Cinematography Winner To Be Shot On Film For Six Years
Movies aren't filmed on traditional film strips as much as they used to be. With the advent of digital technology, most movies today are filmed digitally rather than the old school way of filming things.
Still, many filmmakers and cinematographers prefer film over digital, and Christopher Nolan and Wally Pfister are no exception. Inception was filmed on 35 mm film, with some sequences in 65 mm, and aerial shots done with Vistavision.
Inception won four Academy Awards at the 83rd ceremony, including Best Cinematography, and it was the last one for over half a decade to have been shot on film.
Every year after that until 2016, the films that won best cinematography - Hugo, Life of Pi, Gravity, Birdman, and The Revenant - were all shot on digital. La La Land finally broke this streak when it won the award.
