20 Things You Didn't Know About The Ring

17. Box Office Success

Samara The Ring
Universal Pictures

Hideo Nakata's 1998 original, Ringu, was a massive hit in Japan. It soon became the highest grossing horror film in Japanese history, receiving much global acclaim (The Guardian's Twelfth Best Horror Film Of All Time). With this enormous earning potential, a remake was inevitable, though even Verbinski did not predict the remarkable success.

The Ring would earn a staggering $249,000,000 at the box office, from a budget of $48,000,000, also trouncing its own source material, Ringu, at the Japanese cinemas too.

With those kind of numbers, the world would soon be hit by a wave of sequels and further adaptations of Asian horrors, none of which would ever come close to the success of this film, the one Ring that ruled them all.
