In addition to well-dressed men fiercely dedicated to their careers and a vibrant visual language, Michael Mann's filmography is marked by charged musical scores that sometimes overwhelm the imagery on screen.

Furthermore, most composers see their work replaced late in the game, ensuring working on a Mann production in this capacity does not mean your work will be featured in the final cut.

As he was talking to Vulture about his career, composer James Newton Howard mentioned that maybe 50 percent of his score made it into the final cut. Undeniably, the music in the flick works just great but it is a shame that a good chunk of Howard's work ended up on the cutting room floor.
