4. The Film Took Four Years To Get Off The Ground
Getting a film off the ground, especially one with a large number of challenging technical components, is not easy, and Alfonso Cuaron can attest to this. Despite being released in 2013, Gravity's first draft was written back in 2008 but ended up languishing in development hell for close to half a decade.
As alluded to above, the main reason behind the arduous production process was its complex photography. At the time of the draft's development, digital cinematography had not yet reached a level where it could convincingly realise near Earth orbit as depicted in Cuaron's vision.
Fortunately, the release of Avatar the following year assured Warner Bros. and Cuaron that the space thriller was a possibility.
