20 Things You Somehow Missed In Never Say Never Again

12. The Underwater Sequences

The original Thunderball film was filled with underwater sequences, which helped to show how ahead-of-its-time it was. Although they were a key feature of that movie's success, both critics and fans alike have noted that those scenes could have been trimmed significantly without negatively affecting the plot.

Nevertheless, perhaps knowing that they could not truly compete with the original film, the filmmakers spent considerably less time underwater in Never Say Never Again and the scenes are not as memorable, which is surprising given a lot of the key plot and action sequences still take place underwater.

They did, however, turn to Thunderball's underwater director, second unit director, and stunt co-ordinator, Ricou Browning to perform the same duties on this film. Browning is also the original Gill-Man from the first three of Universal's Creature from the Black Lagoon films.

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
