20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Hateful Eight

Breaking down Tarantino's epic chamber piece.

The Hateful Eight may not be among the most beloved films in Quentin Tarantino's filmography, but by any other metric, it's still a terrifically crafted Western thriller, and a boldly left-field follow-up to his excellent Django Unchained.

It's as richly dense as anything Tarantino has ever made, but between its almost three-hour runtime and the fact that it's probably less revisited than most of Tarantino's movies, there's a good chance you missed many of its most fascinating details.

True to form, The Hateful Eight is a film crammed to the gills with Easter eggs - both references to Tarantino's favourite movies and his own prior works - expert foreshadowing, and even brilliantly clever hints at characters' true allegiances long before it's confirmed.

It's yet further testament to Tarantino's genius as a filmmaker that he can take such a gargantuan, potentially messy ensemble project and not only make it feel so smoothly controlled for all of its beefy runtime, but pack it with so many nuances that beg for it to be rewatched.

And so, if you consider The Hateful Eight a mere one-and-done movie or even "lesser Tarantino," you might want to rethink that...

20. Django's Saddle

We all know that Tarantino loves to reference his prior movies, implying something of a shared universe between them.

And with that in mind, keep your eyes on the three bounty corpses Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) has in his possession at the start of the movie.

The saddle resting on top of them is none other than the very same, distinctive saddle worn by Django (Jamie Foxx) in Tarantino's previous film, Django Unchained.

How Django's saddle ended up in Warren's possession is anyone's guess. But honestly, the mystery is probably far more intriguing than any explanation even Tarantino could possibly give.
