20 Upcoming Action Movies That Could Beat Mad Max: Fury Road
13. Ben Hur
Release Date: February 19, 2016 (UK) / February 26, 2016 (US) Why It Could Beat Fury Road: There isn't exactly a throng of fans of William Wyler's 1959 classic epic who wanted to see it remade, yet Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) has done it anyway, somehow roping in Morgan Freeman and Toby Kebbell for the ride. As easy as it is to be cynical about the movie, it does share a certain kinship with Mad Max: in many ways, the 1959 Ben Hur (which was itself a remake of a 1925 film) was the Fury Road of its time, featuring an iconic, perilous 9-minute chariot race sequence which continues to be regarded as one of the most ambitious and impressive feats of physical stunt-work. While 2016's take will no doubt settle for overt CGI, it's possible that a director as stylish as Bekmambetov could go the Mad Max route, by combining real stunts with an insane visual style to essentially give the original scene a new lick of paint. Plus, Junkie XL, who composed the fantastic score for Fury Road, is also scoring Ben Hur. How Likely Is It?: 4/10. Not a single shot of footage has appeared from the set yet, though considering that the chariot race is just a single component of the film, it would be foolish to expect something as continuous as Fury Road's action. Plus, given the director's history, he'll probably douse the race in CGI, and possibly too much.
