There's a fair argument to be made that we've had enough Pinocchio movies over the years, though the prospect of a stop-motion animated one directed by Guillermo del Toro is just too damn enticing to resist.

While it'll be competing for attention with Robert Zemeckis' own Pinocchio movie due to release on Disney+ later this year, del Toro's film is one hell of a tantalising proposition.

A co-production between Netflix and The Jim Henson Company with a stunning cast including Ewan McGregor, Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton, this thing has the potential to be a sure animated masterpiece.

If nothing else, del Toro will bring his usual dark artistry to the fore, and to sweeten the deal, the score will be provided by Alexandre Desplat, who previously won an Oscar for his work on del Toro's The Shape of Water.

Pinocchio will release in December.
