20 Worst Movies Of 2018 (So Far)
7. The Outsider
Though many had their knives out for this Netflix Original thriller solely for presenting a "whitewashed" protagonist (as played by Jared Leto), its most egregious crime is that it's an utter, charmless bore of a movie and drags on for two whole hours.
Acclaimed Danish filmmaker Martin Zandvliet (Land of Mine) was clearly attempting to ape the tone of Nicolas Winding Refn's slow-burn thrillers, but without anything approaching intrigue, suspense or compelling character motivations, this fell almost completely flat.
The only saving grace is Tadanobu Asano's performance as Nick's (Leto) Yakuza pal Kiyoshi, who clearly should've been the movie's actual protagonist. As it stands, Leto's affect-free performance aims for stoic and ends up snoozily robotic.
Worst Moment: The ham-fisted, perfunctory romantic subplot between Nick and Kiyoshi's sister Miyu (Shiori Kutsuna).
