18. Life Of The Party

In the same year that she made the quite wonderful Can You Ever Forgive Me? Melissa McCarthy showed her unfortunate other side with this joyless coming-of-age comedy. To be fair to her, it was written and directed by her husband Ben Falcone, so you can sort of forgive her for taking it on, but it's still unforgivably bland and curiously mirthless.
The cast is good - with Maya Rudolph standing out - but McCarthy acts through it like she knows she's above the material and struggles to do anything with it because of the limiting PG-13 rating.
In the end, it's predictable, unimaginative and not the sort of thing you want to see from its talent. Tedious, to say the least.
