17. Insidious: The Last Key

2018 was not a particularly great year for horror, all-told, even with some stand-outs like A Quiet Place and Hereditary. To balance those, there were way too many franchise additions that sought to spin money without ever trying too hard to entertain.

Unfortunately, that was very much the case for the fourth instalment in the Insidious franchise, which scores points for focusing on Lin Shaye's parapsychologist Elise Rainier as the main character, but loses them for pretty much everything else.

At this point, it's painfully obvious that this franchise is dead in the water: there's no imagination left and they've deferred to rote tropes and cheap scare techniques. And fatally, there's no real attempt to add anything interesting to this established universe - it's all just too formulaic.
