And people think there was a huge backlash against Ben Affleck being cast as Batman for the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Michael Keaton was largely known for his comedies prior to the release of Batman, which combined with Tim Burton directing caused 50,000 fans to write letters of protest to Warner Bros. Many fans just didn't believe that Keaton had it in him to play such a complex and tormented character, and the press weren't much more helpful, openly mocking the production prior to release. Despite Twitter not existing back in 1989, the outrage made the "Batfleck" upset look like a mild temper tantrum by comparison. As it turned out, of course, Keaton gave a great performance as both Bruce Wayne and the Caped Crusader, leading the film to enormous box office success and solid critical acclaim.
