20 Incredible Recent Movies That FLOPPED
2. Mother Mary
David Lowery's new psychological drama Mother Mary was never going to be a gargantuan crowd-pleaser, and Lowery likely wouldn't have it any other way.
But this fascinatingly strange relationship drama is a sumptuous feast of a movie that, despite being set primarily in a single barn location, crackles by way of the searing chemistry between Anne Hathaway and Michaela Cole - as a pop star and her former costume designer respectively.
The result is one of the year's most singular films, albeit one which unsurprisingly tanked at the box office.
Even with an impressively modest budget of $20 million considering Hathaway's presence and its strong production values, Mother Mary grossed just $3 million worldwide - a disastrous figure that barely eclipses the $2 million total of Lowery's decidedly more alienating 2017 film A Ghost Story.
The vague marketing definitely didn't do this one any favours, but even so, it's tough to picture something so aggressively odd ever turning a profit theatrically.
