Silence Of The Lambs Firstly, that's clearly not a real dog, and secondly, the impact of this particular scene is that the desperation of the victim's situation drives itself right under the viewer's skin, like a splinter, and there's very little hope that she will escape Buffalo Bill's heinous intentions. Posing for the camera with a big cheesy grin, while cuddling into your fluffy dog does not convey the same sort of immediate threat.

15. Leon

Leon Gary Oldman's career high is a difficult thing to pin down for a good reason, but one of his finest villainous turns is undoubtedly the skin-crawling awful Stansfield in Luc Besson's triumphant Leon. He is an inhumane, probably sexually deviant, uncaring fiend, hellbent on snuffing out any life that stands in his way, and Oldman plays him with the perfect balance of snarling and anti-charisma. What he is not is a smiling big brother type, posing for set photos with his prey. But then, I suppose there's something a little off about Natalie Portman's smile there that might hint at something more sinister going on...
