25 Best Werewolf Movies Ever Made
17. When Animals Dream
This artsy Danish drama comes on like the love child of Let The Right One In and Ginger Snaps in its story of a teenage girl struggling with her transforming body and mind into something hairy and aggressive.
When Animals Dream is the story of a 16 year old girl in a tiny remote Danish community. Her life revolves around her family, where her mother is confined to a wheelchair and virtually catatonic, and her work in a fish processing plant where she is bullied by her co-workers. Things change when she discovers strange rashes and new body hair, all of which points to her inheriting her mother's unusual condition.
When Animals Dream is a werewolf movie that is a little coy about being a werewolf movie. It is starkly made and minimalist in content, full of artfully composed shots and little dialogue, a slow, deliberately paced story until it climaxes in a violent finale.
That kind of atmospheric slow burn may not be for everybody, especially those who like their werewolves in gory romps, but for those who appreciate its austere, chilly vibe then When Animals Dream is a hidden gem.
