25 Films That Intentionally Spoil Other Films
13. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
The late, great Rob Reiner’s romantic comedy classic When Harry Met Sally may be best known for its diner scene, but the Nora Ephron-penned script has comedy and dramatic gold lurking behind the dialogue and will-they, won’t-they antics of every scene.
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are Harry and Sally, a misfit couple who begin as strangers, part as enemies, and bump into each other several times over the following 12 years, finding new contours to their relationship on each meeting. The film deals with the age-old question of whether men and women can just be friends - and goes exactly the way you think.
But one of the movie's biggest dramatic and romantic moments is not its own. In a split-screen scene that divides the pair into their separate rooms while simultaneously making it appear as though they’re sharing a bed, Harry and Sally talk on the phone to each other while watching Casablanca (1942). And we join them right at the end.
We’re shown the scene in which Rick (Humphrey Bogart) insists his love Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) depart with his love rival, leaving Rick with just Captain Louis (Claude Rains) for company. Even though Harry and Sally dissect the film and make it relevant to their own drama, the classic romance is nonetheless thoroughly spoiled.
