Haunted hotels aren€™t a new topic for Stephen King, who wrote the short story on which the film is based, as he authored the classic spook novel, The Shining. While parallels between the two stories aren€™t on the page, they€™re in abundance on screen.

When Mike investigates the room€™s notorious history, he uncovers the name of its first victim: a man named Grady. Fans of The Shining will recognise this surname as belonging to the first caretaker of The Overlook who lost his marbles and murdered his family. But wait, there€™s more. During Mike€™s final escape attempt from the room, he sends it up in flames which draws the attention of the fire brigade. The first fireman on the scene takes to the door with an axe - the very same axe Jack Nicholson used in The Shining to tear down the bathroom door.
