13. The Truth About The City Is Revealed - Dark City (1998)
The mind-banging starts gently in this film and I believe it starts in the art direction. The style of costumes, sets and vehicles are a mix of different decades. The reasoning is the aliens that control the city are using a mix of consciences after which to model the city. The intention of the filmmakers is to put the viewers mind on alert. What time is this supposed to be? And subsequently with every plot development our minds are being gently nudged out of place. The main character John Murdock (Rufus Sewell) is finding out that the world he knows is not what it seems. Day never comes. Everyones memory is fabricated by the aliens. It builds and builds until finally the Murdock and Detective Bumstead (William Hurt) are pounding on the city limits wall. In one instant, in one shot, our minds are blown right along with them. Even if you could feel it coming, its still a wonder to see. Yes: the wall falls away and all thats behind it his space. As in the universe. The entire city is a space station protected by a force field. With just one glance behind the wall, Murdock is forced to accept that everything is a lie. What this movie does wonderfully is that it continues. It shows what one must do after getting their mind blown. But youll have to watch it to find out what that is.
