3. Smithalogue
Kevin Smith dialogue is about as unique as dialogue from Tarantino or David Mamet. Sure, it can be criticized as simplistic or immature but aren't most conversations in real life? Smith had a knack for capturing those immature and lazy conversations and allowing his actors to give them flair and make them recognizable to anyone that has made a dick joke and a Star Wars reference in the same sentence. Don't agree with me? Then ask yourself who else could have written and directed a film like Clerks and actually made it an entertaining hit. It, like his other films, was a trip down memory lane for everyone that has been directionless, held a nine to five they hate, etc. Smith certainly had a brand with his dialogue. He mastered it with films like Chasing Amy and Dogma which managed to be perfected balances between immature comedies and mature meditations on life. Smithologue is something I will certainly miss when Kevin Smith decides to hang his hat. Though maybe it's not all bad news. He claims he will continue to write and has talked about reprising some of his characters in radio serials. Who knows? It could work. Whatever helps me continue to hear dick jokes and Star Wars references in conversations about sexuality and organized religion and the overall meaning of life.
