3 Ups And 7 Downs From X-Men: Apocalypse

6. Apocalypse Never Feels Like A Legitimate Threat

"He looks like Ivan Ooze." "His voice sounds funny." "Isnt he just evil for evils sake?"

Yes all those pre-release criticisms sadly still stand, but Apocalypse is more disappointing a villain than just that. His origin is plain odd, and while it has rooting in the comics, the presentation of it and his resurrection just feels kitsch - Ultron's gathering of knowledge seems smart in comparison. That's nothing on his big plan though, which is incredibly one note and so full of holes its like Wolverine in a waterbed. His horsemen arent up to much either, just standing around looking super serious or mopey.

En Sabah Nur isn't a totally nothing villain, but he's far too goofy to be a legitimate threat; there's only one action beat near the end where we get a real sense of his power and menace.

Worst of all, you actually forget its one of the greatest modern actors underneath all that make-up. Oscar Isaac does his best with the body he's given, but his rasping can do nothing to offset the character.
