30 Iconic Movie Lines That Are Always Misquoted

1. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

EmpireThe Misquote: "Luke, I am your father." The Real Quote: "No. I am your father." Why It Was Misquoted: If there is one element of popular culture that has become ingrained in the general knowledge of the population, it is Darth Vader€™s reveal as Luke Skywalker's father. Maybe it was the immediacy of the twist, its presence in one of the most anticipated films of the time, or the sheer simplicity of line, but it stands proud as one of the one of the most iconic moments in cinema history, sending chills down audience's backs they hadn't felt since, well, Han was frozen in carbonite. It is a twist up there with Rosebud or, jumping medium, Jekyll and Hyde. There's been three movies based around it, but it's hard not to get shivers in that scene. Vader is simultaneously revealing his big secret and destroying Luke's view of Obi-Wan; it makes Nolan look positively light hearted. And yet to this day it is still ridiculously commonly misquoted. As the original €˜No€™ requires a lead in of at least two lines, it reduces its quotabilty significantly. For kids playing Empire in the playground, a quicker version was needed. As Luke Skywalker is such a famous character, his substitution is clearly the most logical. But it still sullens the effect of one of cinema's greatest lines. So there are our Top 30 misquotes.
