The debut feature from Danny and Michael Philippou was a great success overall and another testament to the power of Australia's horror scene. As well as ranking in the upper tier of horror films this decade, it also featured one of the all-time great possession scenes.

There have been many, many possession scenes in horror movies over the years - few have been quite as harrowing as this one. In this case, some teens take turns in using a mysterious severed hand to contact spirits and when it's Riley's (Joe Bird) turn, he appears to be possessed by the spirit of Rhea, the late mother of protagonist Mia (Sophie Wilde).

Mia is so overcome by emotion but she allows Riley to remain possessed for too long, meaning that he then becomes overtaken by spirits which nearly force him to commit suicide. In a horrific and gory sequence, he repeatedly bashes himself against the walls and even tries to pluck his own eye. It's a sequence which will have even the toughest horror fans watching through their fingers, and it single-handedly confirmed the Philippou Brothers as horror directors to watch.
