30 Perfect Horror Scenes Of The 2020s
24. Immaculate - Cecilia Gives Birth
If anyone is ever in doubt as to Sydney Sweeney's talents as an actor, then they need to watch this sequence. They'll have to eat their words afterwards.
Immaculate was a perfectly OK Rosemary's Baby knock-off overall, but Sweeney's performance basically was the movie. She's the only particular reason to watch it, and she saved her best acting for the very end of the film, where her character, Sister Cecilia, gives birth to a deformed, possibly demonic baby, one which the film's villains forcibly impregnated her with.
Shot mostly in an unbroken close-up, this scene is a showcase for Sweeney's unhinged, viscerally intense performance. She single-handedly makes this one of the most disturbing, discomforting birthing scenes in any recent movie, and delivers some of the finest work of her career so far.
As if all of this wasn't already intense enough, it concludes with Cecilia lifting up a rock and killing the baby before the movie abruptly cutting to black. Immaculate is the kind of film you won't remember much of, but this scene will be buried in your mind whether you like it or not.
