31 Most Iconic Lines From Batman Movies
30. Riddle Me This
The Quote: "Riddle me this, Riddle me that, who's afraid of the big... black... bat? "
Jim Carrey's performance as the cat-suit wearing Riddler takes a lot of flak - too much in fact - for the colourful extravagance and lack of restraint that traditionally comes with casting the former Ace Ventura star, but he did fit Joel Schumacher's aspirations to retain a certain Burton-esque quality to Batman Forever. Carrey's Riddler might not be the calculating super-genius we've seen elsewhere in the famous green costume, but he is irresistibly watchable - mostly thanks to the fact that he draws his best points from the Joker.
Carrey's commitment to the role - and to a bad script - are to be applauded, and he can rightly hold his head high as one of the only redeeming elements of Schumacher's attempts at the franchise. And a lot of that comes down to his dynamic with Bruce Wayne and Batman, built on this kind of goading banter.
29. Shreck's Motto
The Quote: "I am the light of this city, and I'm its mean, twisted soul."
Villain monologuing is the traditional last bastion for Bond villains, and even in Schumacher's poor movies that cliche was mostly avoided, but what Batman's rogues tend to have in place of that internal desire is an inflated sense of self. They are villainous archetypes, important beyond all else in their own minds, and imbued with a sense of self-worth that makes both Batman's insolence in assuming he can take them down, and the very idea of their fallibility ludicrous. And that's precisely why we love to hate them.
Their arrogance - and especially that of Max Shreck - is the sweet cherry on their demise, adding poetic justice when Batman (or Catwoman in this case) takes them down.
