5 Directors Who Are Still Living Off The Good Will Of One Film

1. The Wachowski'sside-by-side-lana-andy-wachowskiAKA - "The Visionaries Behind The Matrix" The prime examples of directors not only failing to deliver a sequel worthy of the original, but failing to provide anything even remotely noteworthy as directors since their breakthrough film. Andy and Lana (formerly Larry) are two filmmakers that exploded onto the scene with the amazing and genre defining Matrix. Some had already known of the duo from their previous work on Bound and Richard Donner's Assassins, but to most they were an unknown entity. No one knew who they were or where they arrived from, but they had stolen The Phantom Menace's thunder with a film that is still held in as high regard now, as when it first came out. The world couldn't wait to see what they did next. First we got Enter The Matrix, a video game which was sloppy and despite it initially looking amazing, ended up being a repetitive mess. We then received an almost double whammy of Matrix with the two sequels filmed together and then released six months apart. Despite the odd exciting moment, both films were met with a critical slamming. No one liked the where they had chosen to take the story or the awkward rave/sex scenes and the skin tight outfits which seemed exciting in the original, now seemed perverse and worrying. Then we received V for Vendetta which despite the Wachowski's only writing it, people loved it.A smart, faithful, well made piece of film making it seemed all was forgiven. Sure they made a mistake or two, with Reloaded and Revolutions, but the bar had been set so high it was only natural they'd fumble. Then came Speed Racer. The less said about it the better, other than it was like watching someone with ADD in a sweet shop. Colours and cars were swirling past the audience with such sickening fervor that it would turn even Willy Wonka's stomach. The knives were back out as the film was panned. The recent Cloud Atlas showed that the Wachowski's might just be a one trick pony, though it's a pony they seem intent on bludgeoning to death for as long as they can. Do you agree with my choices?
