5 Films Where Audrey Tautou Plays A Total Nut-Case

4. Thérèse (2012)

Ther 01 One of the more recent outings for Tautou, Thérèse is the story of Thérèse Desqueyroux, a woman stifled by 1920s high society in France and trapped by vicious old-family loyalty. So what do you do in this situation? Run away? Have an affair? Well, no. You see, what Thérèse decides to do instead of these normal reactions is to burn down an entire pine forest, give birth to a daughter and then ignore her, and slowly murder her husband with deliberate medical overdoses, which no one seems that concerned over when they find out. Throughout all of that she also embarks on a weird platonic letter-exchange relationship with her best friend's lover, while at the same time struggling with her obvious yet not admitted lesbian feelings for that very same best friend. At one point she gets so weirdly jealous that she sets fire to a photo of the lover while riding the train home. That's normal, right? To be honest, this isn't the best of Tautou's films. Still, it would be advisable not to marry anyone from 1920s aristocratic France. (Original title: Thérèse Desqueyroux)
