5 Netflix Originals We've Loved This Year (And 5 That Totally Disappointed)

1. Amazing: The Dig

Directed by Simon Stone, this sumptuous period drama centers on the excavation of Sutton Hoo during the late 1930s. An archeological marvel, Sutton Hoo's significance as an Anglo-Saxon burial site cannot be understated.

However, the fascinating story of the site's discovery and initial excavation remains relatively unknown by the public at large. The Dig brings to light the tumultuous means by which a self-taught archaeologist, Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes), helped to transform our understanding of medieval English history.

Also starring Carey Mulligan, Johnny Flynn, and Lily James, The Dig also centers on the relationships between the small group of archaeologists, historians, and photographers who aided in the site's excavations. While some did criticize the film's (relatively infrequent) historical inaccuracies (an ill-fated romance between Flynn and James' characters is entirely fictional), others were enamored by the film's focus on the more human elements of the story.

Lauded for its incredible performances, stunning cinematography, and strong script, The Dig was a hit amongst audiences and critics alike. If you like gorgeous period pieces and tense historical dramas, then consider Stone's well-crafted account of this groundbreaking archaeological discovery heartily recommended.
