5 Oscars 2016 Nominations They Got Right (And 5 They Got Wrong)
What They Got Wrong...
5. No Aaron Sorkin - Best Adapted Screenplay
Michael Fassbender received a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Steve Jobs, but it was a big surprise not to see Aaron Sorkin's screenplay (based on Walter Isaacson's biography) get a nomination along with him. If you've seen any of Sorkin's work, then it undeniably has his imprint all over it, for better or worse - but quite often it's the former. That's certainly the case with Steve Jobs, which he turned into a theatrical three-act story that tells three compact arcs within one larger narrative, and was full of his typically wordy, fast-paced dialogue. Fassbender and Kate Winslet both have acting nominations for the film, but it was Sorkin's script that helped get them there, and while it's obviously different arms of the Academy it's still baffling as to why this wasn't nominated. On the plus side, at least there was a spot in this category for Drew Goddard's adaptation of Andy Weir's novel The Martian, making sure to carry over both the science and the humour, and lose nothing from it.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
