5 Potential Directors To Helm Star Trek 3

Star-Trek-Into-Darkness

A sequel to Star Trek Into Darkness is inevitable. The blockbuster is doing great business around the world despite stiff competition and the series' 50th anniversary is approaching in 2016 - something Paramount are looking to celebrate with the continued adventures of Kirk and co. It seems likely however that J.J. Abrams, the man who brought the franchise back into the public consciousness, will be too busy to complete his Trek trilogy.

Why? Well unless you've been living under a rock for the past few months you'll be aware that Abrams is the man handpicked by Disney to do for Star Wars what he did for Trek. With Star Wars: Episode VII targeting a 2015 release it's highly unlikely that Abrams will be able to direct the next Trek movie. While it's a fact that will cause some fans concern it could well be great for the series - particularly if you were critical of Into Darkness' lack of originality. But who could direct the third rebooted Trek film?

Here are five potential candidates...

5. Matt Reeves

LET ME IN

J.J. Abrams' childhood buddy and long-time collaborator was the man behind the lens of Abrams-produced monster movie Cloverfield - which thanks to its now-legendary teaser trailer became something of a classic back in 2008. He followed smashing up New York City with the English language remake of Let The Right One In and is currently filming Apes sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes for release next year. This frees him up nicely to direct a film in time for 2016 and his connection to J.J. Abrams makes him one of the more obvious choices. Cloverfield split opinion and Let Me In was praised but ultimately couldn't live up to the Swedish original, so it's his primate blockbuster next year which will surely be the best indication of whether he's up to the task.
